When Adrienne Vanterpool Canton promised to love her husband in sickness and in health, she never imagined that meant sharing his STD. The Harlem woman is suing estranged spouse Lionel Canton for $3 million for allegedly giving her herpes.
Vanterpool, 62, filed for divorce from Canton, 63, in 2016 after learning she’d contracted the herpes virus, according to her Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit.
The couple wed in 2010 — but it took five more years for her to discover the shocking news about her compromised health.
Canton “knew that he had contracted the herpes virus, yet knowingly engaged in marital sexual relations with [Vanterpool],” according to court papers.
He “knowingly and fraudulently and maliciously concealed the fact that he had the herpes virus from [his wife] while engaging in sexual relations with [her],” the suit says. “Exposing her to the virus was egregious, outrageous, intentional, reckless, willful and wanton and despicable.”
There is no cure for the common STD, which over one in six people ages 14 to 49 have, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Vanterpool wants a multimillion-dollar payout from her ex for “severe and permanent personal injuries, embarrassment, emotional distress, humiliation and suffering.”
