The bright red Tesla Roadster launched into space aboard Elon Musk's SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket could survive hundreds of close encounters with the Earth for tens of millions of years, according to a study.
The study, found in Cornell University's Library, claims that the Tesla CEO's Roadster's first close encounter with Earth will occur in 2091 with others coming every other 30 years or so. The authors of the study, Canadian and Czech researchers, report that the Tesla Roadster in orbit has a 6 percent chance of colliding with the Earth and a 2.5 percent chance of hitting Venus.
"The repeated encounters lead to a random walk that eventually causes close encounters with other terrestrial planets and the Sun," the study reads. "Long-term integrations become highly sensitive to the initial conditions after several such close encounters.
"We estimate the dynamical lifetime of the Tesla to be a few tens of millions of years."
