Nathan Chen ends his 2018 Winter Olympics experience on own terms

GANGNEUNG, South Korea — Nathan Chen’s stirring revival from Winter Olympic anguish began as he lay on his bed in the Athletes’ Village.

“Screw it,” Chen said to himself, after his miserable performance in Friday’s short program landed the presumed gold medal contender down in 17th place. But from there came a mental shift. Chen fell asleep and woke up refreshed, then resolved to add an unprecedented sixth quad jump into his already power-packed program.

Then, on Saturday morning, skating in an early group due to his low standing, he produced the performance of his lifetime. Chen stuck five quads perfectly and put his hands down for a sixth, to rack up an imposing score of 215.08.

It was not expected to be good enough to compete for a medal, but it did at least make things interesting and was an outstanding show of resilience from a young man who had seen his dreams crumble a day earlier. The crowd at Gangneung Ice Arena adored Chen’s performance, both for its technical wizardry but even more so for the emotion behind it, the struggle he overcame and the courage that shined from him.
