EXCLUSIVE Bellator 194: Heavyweight favourite Matt Mitrione reveals plans to open cannabis farm; Roy Nelson craves UK fight

Matt Mitrione
Att Mitrione faces Roy Nelson on Saturday at the Mohegan Resort, Connecticut, and reckons he will scalp opponent Roy Nelson on skills alone, making nothing of the fact that he has been installed as the No 1 seed in the Bellator heavyweight tournament.

"It’s the same soup reheated," the former Minnesota Vikings NFL player told Telegraph Sport. "You’re the favourite, you’re not the favourite. You’re introduced first, you’re introduced second. Same damn thing, brother. It doesn’t matter."

Mitrione, admittedly, carped at the draw when he learnt that his opponent in the quarter-finals would be Roy Nelson. Nelson won their first meeting by first round TKO. Much was made of it.

He explained: "I didn’t want to fight Roy because for the position I’ve earned it was kind of silly. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to fight Roy. I didn’t think a tournament was appropriate for what I’ve earned."

Overall, though, he says that the tournament "is a win-win for everybody except for me. Even Frank Mir (the former UFC heavyweight champion). He hasn’t fought in two years. He comes in and wins, it’s a win win for Frank."

To be fair to Mitrione, his improvements since he lost to Nelson six years ago have been vast. Intriguingly, the 39-year-old is preparing himself for life after fighting, revealing that like Mike Tyson, he is planning on opening a medical marijuana farm.

"I have prepared myself for a life after fighting, for sure. I live conservatively. My mortgage is 1200 dollars a month. I own outright all my cars. I don’t have anything that comes out of my account. I make sure I live within my budget all the time. I have a couple of rental properties as well. I’m mostly playing the market at the moment."
