LOS ANGELES - Devin Harris has played in 250 games since rejoining the Mavericks before the 2013-14 season.
Wednesday was just his fourth start in that time.
Desperate to get off to a better start than they have been getting in recent games, coach Rick Carlisle inserted Harris into the lineup and it reaped quick dividends as the Mavericks went up by eight points in the first quarter.
The Mavericks got blasted in the second quarter as Blake Griffin and Austin Rivers led the Los Angeles Clippers to a 119-98 victory, extending the Mavericks' worst start to a season in 19 years.
They fell to 1-8, the same record they had in Dirk Nowitzki's first season, 1998-99.
To find a worse start than that, you have to go to 1993-94, when they were 1-23 on their way to a 13-69 season.
The Mavericks continue to make too many mistakes to win games. They've had trouble rebounding, trouble with turnovers, trouble starting games.
Against the Clippers, they simply couldn't defend well enough. The Clippers got to the rim easily and more than doubled the Mavericks in points in the paint through three quarters, after which they were ahead 95-77.
