CLEVELAND, Ohio - Halloween is one of the favorite times of the year for college students. They can dress up in crazy costumes and attend house, dorm and street parties.
But what they wear has increasingly come under scrutiny by college officials and fellow students in this age of racial and cultural awareness.
Mexicans, Native Americans, blackface and homeless people are taboo. Avoid dressing like someone accused of sexual assault, such as Harvey Weinstein or Bill Cosby.
Even creepy clowns are discouraged.
But politicians and presidents are still OK.
The key words on campuses are "cultural appropriation," which means to pretend to be a member of an ethnic, racial or gender group to which you do not belong.
Halloween is a "time when many make inappropriate decisions about how to dress for the holiday and wear costumes that would constitute cultural appropriation," says the University of Michigan.
"Cultural appropriation often occurs on Halloween when individuals choose to wear costumes that present aspects of another culture in a joking fashion," the university said. "This can take the form of Inuit costumes, Geisha costumes, gangster Costumes, Native American costumes, etc. A costume that is focused on aspects of a culture that is not yours can reinforce offensive stereotypes and humiliate the people you are attempting to represent."
