Trick-or-treating and more this Halloween

It’s the spooky time of year once again and there’s no shortage of haunts, treats and sweets available this Halloween.

Several events are held throughout the weekend in Sequim and the surrounding area for children and adults. Some require admission while others are free and some have stipulations for entry, so plan accordingly.

Through Oct. 31

• Pumpkin Patch fun

Sequim’s Pumpkin Patch and corn maze is open and ready for business. The Pumpkin Patch, a 33-acre farm at the corner of U.S. Highway 101 and Kitchen-Dick Road is open from noon-6 p.m. Monday-Friday (9-10 a.m. for field trips) and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Co-owner Theresa Lassila said the corn maze this year features an “Alice in Wonderland” theme designed by brother-and-sister duo Eric and Amanda Lawton. Lassila said she keeps the Pumpkin Patch going each year in memory of her father, Phil Lassila, who started the tradition in 1999.

U-pick pumpkins vary in cost depending on the size, type and style of pumpkin. The pumpkin shoot costs $5 for two pumpkins and a chance at $100 if it goes in the barrel. The maze costs $5 for youths 12 and younger to visit, $10 for 13 and older. To schedule an appointment for field trips, call Lassila at 360-461-0940.

A silent classic horror film with live piano accompaniment? It’s hard to get more “Halloween” than that. Peninsula College’s Magic of Cinema presents the quintessential vampire film,” Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror,” with an original live score by local composer and musician Linda Dowdell, from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, in the Maier Performance Hall, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles. The screening is free an open to the public, and features an introduction by Nick Thompson, local filmmaker and photographer. • Haunted Bordello in PT

Open only to those 17 and older, Port Townsend’s Haunted Bordello returns to 313 Walker St. on Friday, Oct. 27, and Saturday, Oct. 28, from 7-10:30 p.m. by reservation. Tickets of $15 must be purchased in advance at eventbrite.com. At tour time, attendees’ names will be read off at will-call. Groups of three to five guests will be admitted to the house at once. The guided tour includes strobe lights, artificial smoke, steep stairs and graphic scenes.

Oct. 27, Oct. 28, Oct. 31

• Fifth Floor Haunted House

Port Angeles’ Naval Elks Lodge, 131 E. First St., will present “Twisted Myths & Fairy Tales” from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27; Saturday, Oct. 28; and Tuesday, Oct. 31. Tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 for youths 12 and younger. Profits benefit the Elks National Foundation, which supports community grants and scholarships. Participants embark on the haunted house by way of elevator to the fifth floor of the lodge, where “twisted” mystical characters await the unsuspecting. The haunted house does not allow participants or actors to touch — of course, that doesn’t restrict jumping out of shadowy corners.

Saturday, Oct. 28

• High school hosts ‘Haunted Hallways’

Sequim High School’s annual Haunted Hallways event is 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, in the high school’s H building, 601 N. Sequim Ave. Parents/guardians can bring children dressed in costumes for Halloween activities and fun. No admission is required, but donations of canned food will be accepted and appreciated. This is supported by Sequim High’s ASB and campus clubs.

• Family scavenger hunt, events on tap

Olympic Nature Experience hosts a Fall Family Scavenger Hunt set for 1-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Old Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2741 Towne Road, Sequim. Along with the scavenger hunt, the event features storytelling, snacks and a bake sale. Cost is $15 per family or $5 per person. All proceeds benefit the Olympic Nature Experience. • Pumpkin party, fair at Sequim Prairie Grange

The Sequim Prairie Grange Pumpkin Party and Country Fair is set for 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Glenda Clark Memorial Kitchen behind the grange hall, 290 Macleay Road. The event features pumpkin carving and cookie decorating. The doors to the hall open at 4:30 p.m. for the Country Fair, with food, games (ring toss, darts, fishing pond, etc.), guessing games and a cake walk with food available for purchase in the kitchen. • Halloween Bash at the Boys and Girls Club

The Carroll C. Kendall Unit Boys and Girls Club in Sequim, 400 W. Fir St., is holding a Halloween Bash from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28. Admission is $1 per person and includes 10 games tickets. There will be pizza, games, arts and crafts, a haunted house, costume contest and cupcake walk. It is open to the public and all ages are welcome.

• Halloween Party 7 Cedars Casino

7 Cedars is throwing a Halloween party and costume contest with musical guest Sway from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Club Seven, 7 Cedars Casino, 270756 U.S. Highway 101, Sequim. Costume contest begins at 11 p.m. and there will be $2,500 in cash prizes. No cover, guests must be 21 and over.

Sunday, Oct. 29

• ‘Owloween Party’, 275953 U.S. Highway 101, Gardiner, hosts an “Owloween Party” from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, to raise money for Discovery Bay Wild Bird Rescue. Bird rescue volunteers are bringing their rescue owls for the event, which will also feature games and prizes for youths, including 30 handmade great horned owl masks. Call 360-797-7100.

Tuesday, Oct. 31

• Sequim Merchants Trick or Treat

The annual Sequim Merchants Trick or Treat will be held at a variety of Sequim businesses between 3-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31. The free event, sponsored by the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce and Sequim Merchants, features business owners with a posted picture of a pumpkin in their window handing out treats to children.
