James Cook pledges to Georgia
Once 4-star running back James Cook de-committed from Florida State in July, the focus in his recruitment shifted towards Athens and the Georgia Bulldogs.
Late Thursday night, the younger brother of former Florida State standout rusher Dalvin Cook made it official and announced his commitment to coach Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs.
The Miami [Fla.] Central product rates as the nation’s No. 3 running back and the No. 35 player overall in the 2018 cycle.
He originally committed to Florida State in March 2016 before reopening his recruitment this summer.
On the field, the Seminoles won’t feel the sting of losing out on the younger Cook as much as one would think.
If there’s one position where the depth chart is stocked with talent and depth in Tallahassee, it’s running back.
Star freshman Cam Akers looks primed to carry the load for coach Jimbo Fisher’s offense for at least the next two seasons. Fellow 2017 standout freshmen Khalan Laborn and Zaquandre White were touted recruits who should figure into the rotation in the coming years.
The 2018 class features a pair of in-state commits in 4-star Jashaun Corbin and 3-star Charles Strong. Corbin is a 6-foot, 191-pound versatile back who excels in creating big plays in space while Strong is a 6-1, 230-pound hammer who can do damage in between the tackles.
Perhaps the biggest sting of losing out on the younger Cook is the perception of losing out on a legacy recruit.
With the success that Dalvin Cook enjoyed at Florida State, it would make sense that his younger brother would want to follow in his footsteps and play for Fisher.
The fact that he chose to go elsewhere — especially during a time when the Seminoles are struggling mightily on the field — is just another sign that things aren’t exactly normal in Tallahassee.
Still, the Seminoles have a class that rates No. 8 nationally with a pair of touted running backs in the fold. So perhaps all is not lost as it pertains to the future of the backfield for the Seminoles.
The nation’s No. 5 inside linebacker and the No. 125 player overall in the 2018 cycle per 247Sports has a final five that includes Florida State, North Carolina, South Carolina, Stanford and Virginia Tech.
He’s taken official visits to each of the schools on that list with the exception of Stanford — which he will see the weekend of Jan. 12.
According to Scout.com’s Michael Clark, the 6-2, 236-pound Shelby [N.C.] native “hopes” to make a final decision the week after his Stanford official visit.
This month alone, Hollifield has taken visits to South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia Tech. The Hokies were the last school to get him on campus for the 59-7 win over the Tar Heels last weekend.
Hollifield is no stranger to Blacksburg having taken a handful of unofficial visits there in the offseason. However, it appears as if coach Justin Fuente and his staff made a strong move in the recruitment of Hollifield.
