A woman claims that a pack of Atlantic cod she purchased from Costco included one unwelcome addition: a live, wriggling parasitic worm.
The Maryland-area Costco customer posted video of the squirmy discovery to Facebook Wednesday. In the footage, a worm is seen clearly encased inside a blue styrofoam package of fish — and definitely moving around beneath the plastic wrapping.
Emily Randolph said she bought the Atlantic cod Feb. 9 with plans to prepare the fish before its "sell by" date, local broadcast station WTTG reported. When the fish began to smell, Randolph took a look at the fish package and noticed the parasite.
"It was big," Randolph told the news station. "I have even Googled it since then and that was a very large worm. It should have been caught before it was put out to the public to potentially eat."
Randolph returned the fish to Costco, only to find out she wasn't the only customer returning seafood with that particular issue.
"When we took the video to Costco to get our money back, the girl behind the counter said someone had just returned salmon with worms in it," Randolph wrote on Facebook. "No apologies at all. She acted as if this happens all the time. I'm so grossed out.
