Traffic stop escalates into two-county chase, shooting of trooper and suspect

A Department of Public Safety trooper and the suspect he had pursued across two counties were wounded in a shootout Sunday afternoon in far east Bexar County, an official said.

Shortly after 3 p.m., the trooper initiated a stop of a black Chrysler 300 sedan for a traffic violation in Guadalupe County on FM 78. It was not known what type of violation had allegedly occurred, according to Trooper Deon Cockrell, a DPS spokesman.

The male driver gave the trooper a false name during the stop, Cockrell said, and, as the trooper was attempting to arrest the man, a scuffle ensued.

The man was able to escape from the trooper, got back in his vehicle and fled. Cockrell said the trooper then lost sight of the suspect and that is when DPS air support responded.

A DPS helicopter spotted the suspect’s car going west on Interstate 10 in Bexar County. The trooper was able to re-establish contact and chased the suspect off the highway. The suspect then used the Graytown Road bridge to cross over I-10 and continued to travel westbound down the two-way access road, Cockrell said.
